Poets have language as their tool as they craft poetry. Metaphors and similes are figures of speech that can make the poem sound like music. There is history, meanings, and suggestions in each poem that show the mastery of language that the poet has. Language can create unforgettable images that compare to life’s happenings. Some poetry can seem like nonsense at first but is actually rich in its overtones of meanings and can imply or suggest other things using symbols. Flowers, storms and sunrises, for example, each represent a certain feeling and meaning in their symbolisms. The sounds, rhymes, and rhythms can easily be transferred into sounds that are pleasing to the ear, like music. Alliteration is when a consonant sound is repeated within a verse. Assonance is when a vowel sound is repeated in a verse. Rhyming can happen anywhere in the poem but is normally found at the end of lines within the poem. Poems do not have to rhyme to be beautiful.

The Baboon’s Moon

Very soon,

The big baboon

Will sing a lively tune

And swoon and croon

Like a lovesick loon

To a yellow balloon

He thought was the glowing full moon

In June.

What a goofy goon!

The moon has inspired many poems. It’s energy affects the tides, the weather, and of course the emotions of the human being. It’s incredible how instinct is affected by the moon’s energy. The moon is also beautiful in it’s changing face. The full moon speaks to all of us. The dark phase of the moon has affects too. We tend to behave differently as the moon passes over the earth. Sometimes, the moon can be seen in the dawn’s first light. It is an incredible sight and always fills me up with a wild energy, almost barbaric at times. They have got pictures of the dark side of the moon. It never sees the Sun or the Earth. There seems to be no life on the moon. It is just a big hunk of dead rock floating around the Earth; our satellite. One day, man’s quest to explore new things will bring him past the moon, past the planets of our solar system, and out into the Great Unknown of space. I hope Man does not destroy our planet before he goes. In the meantime, the Moon’s gravity will continue to pull on our energies. Finding Zen is very important, in order to, combat extreme emotions that can be influenced by the moon. Maintain Peace. It’s the only way we will survive until we find a way out there, into the great beyond.

What motivates a poet to write? A poet lets words from his own imagination, intellect, and experience flow through his pen. A poet has a love of language and plays with words to create fresh, pleasant-sounding poetry. Ben Jonson said, “A good Poet’s made as well as born”, which is true. Poems are usually structured in lines rather than in paragraphs. They consist of image, sound, and rhythm. Poems uncover truths and are spontaneous outpourings of powerful feelings. It is important for the reader to relate to the poet’s words. Read the poem once silently, then once out loud, in order to get a better understanding of the poet’s intentions. What is the first impression? A poem usually has plural meanings. Arming yourself with a dictionary is good advice. What tone or mood does the poem have?

Bunny’s Nose

Quivering, Questing,

The bunny’s nose

Is always testing.

Sitting in a pose

Ears held high

Up to the sky

As the fox’s scent

Is forward sent

And bunny hops away

And saves the day.

Being aware. Staying safe. Your intuition can guide you to the right people and places. Always go with your gut instinct. When something is right, your stomach gets warm and fuzzy. When things are wrong, your stomach goes queezy and you feel sick. When you are unsure, ask your guides. Stand still, with your feet firmly planted on the ground, close your eyes if you like, and listen to your body’s tingles as spirit touches yours, in an protective answer. This is called grounding, and can be done anywhere, anytime. As you open up to the power of the divine, you create the best possible outcome. Creatality: The ability to create your own reality. Every human has this ability. Sense the spirit’s touch and you will experience Extra-sensory perception (ESP). This phenomenon can be scary if you are not expecting it. Rocks, such as hematite or tiger’s eye, can help in your grounding, so you don’t feel light-headed. Also, be sure to nourish and feed the body with healthy nutrients, so you have balance.

The tone of the poem is the attitude you feel in it. Tone can be playful, funny, regretful, angry etc. Almost all poetry has messages that can be as diverse as stars. The poem has certain beauties in sound and meaning. The attitude a poet has towards his/her audience and the thing, or subject that is being talked about gives you the general emotional tone of the poem. Verbal Irony is saying one thing while meaning another. To understate is to say less than is meant, while to overstate means to exaggerate with the words. Two things to consider when reading poetry is what’s being discussed and what the poet thinks about it. Explore the poem. Every poem has a speaker. Like a regular story there is also a setting, a situation, a plot, and a main character. There is also an atmosphere about each poem that inspires emotion in the reader.

The Hands 2

Small hands,

Large hands.

Hands across the miles.

Hands across the globe.

Clasping hands,

Grasping hands.

Hands of love.

Fingers;

Long and lean,

Short and fat.

Feeling with touch;

Soft and smooth,

Hot and cold,

Day and night,

Left and right.

Knuckles wrap

And hands clap.

Nails scratch

And try to match

The hand that molds

And then holds;

Fork, knife, spoon,

Scissors and pen.

Dexterous and nimble

The hand is not simple.

Hands are something we all have in common. When we join hands in peace one at a time, we achieve joy and simplicity. The simple flower is a symbol of universal and earthly love. It takes love to grow a flower, the most fragile of earth’s plants. Yet, so simple in its needs, only needing dirt, sun, and water to flourish. They raise their petaled heads to greet the spring and summer sun. Then, when autumn arrives, they produce seeds that sleep for the winter and grow again in the spring. This is reminiscent of the cycle of life for all living beings. As we complete the tasks assigned to us before birth, we learn throughout this lifetime, and figure out what to work on next lifetime. The cycle of life is never-ending: the young become old, and the old become young. A person’s life is meant to be the best possible. It is a time of learning, understanding, and teaching. The wisdom gained in this lifetime, will help you on the next spiritual level as your soul continues its journey. So reach out, hold another’s hand. These are the people of Earth that walk together for peace.

Poets are interesting people. They are creative and sensitive. They think in different ways and in new directions. Find out about the craft of poetry and how it can make your mind open and nimble. Also, writing is a worthwhile way to express yourself, whether it be as poetry or in a journal entry. You can form ideas, jot down poetic fragments, or your journal could contain your research on poetic craft. Journals can contain other things too: your dreams, your meals, little jokes that you know. Write things down: You have so much to say. You could use either an actual journal, or a binder with paper, or your computer to save paper. I encourage you to voice your thoughts. Nobody ever has to see them. Its for your benefit to be able to sort your ideas, views, and opinions into a written form that makes sense to you. Find the poetry in your soul.

Hands

The Hands.

So expressive

Of personality.

Clasping hands,

We share

The love of forever.

Small hands

Are big enough

To carry the load,

And large hands

Are small enough

To delicately hold

A flower,

Without breaking a petal.

Rings adorn the fingers

As fortune

Nips the tips

Of the nails.

Hands are worthy

Of study.

Each hand holds

Expressions

Of caring.

Each person

Uses their movements

To indicate

Feelings and emotions.

Hands tell stories

Of times gone by,

And dreams yet to be.

Hands,

Holding us gently

In today’s world.

Always believe that the hand of Spirit is holding your hand. When the hands are cold, try holding a cup of hot chocolate or tea or coffee, to warm up. Another thing that works is running them under warm water, or doing dishes! That is also therapeutic; it makes you feel good. It is always so sweet to see folks holding hands. It is a gesture of support, and a gesture of love. It can be a memory never forgotten, and cherished into old age. Lending a helping hand is the best way to prove friendship and companionship. Hold the hand of one who is dear to you and let them hold yours back. Touch the innocence of a held hand.
