The Race

The horses are all standing at the gate

Pawing and snorting as they wait

For the bell to ring

So they can take wing

And make their way around the track,

Neck and neck on the way back.

Excitement ripples thru the crowd

As the favorite is announced aloud.

“It’s a photo finish!

Cash your tickets for the winnins’!”

This is a gambler’s game

That’s how it got its name.

Life is like a race. It can be so exciting if you let it be. For a while I volunteered to play a game of horse races with the seniors (it is a boardgame). The seniors would get so energized with the game, and I would be absolutely pumped, as I facilitated the game. It didn’t really matter who won because we were just there to have fun, and a jackpot of nickels became the incentive. I think the biggest jackpot we had was around $2.50. Regular horse racing at the track is fun, but easy to lose. The jackpots are higher dollars and the money put out on bets is phenomenal compared. I love horses. I always have. Mankind has relied on them for many millennia. Hard to believe that they are strickly for the rich now. There was a time that horses were everywhere. Progress called cars, changed the odds. Now horses are purely for entertainment purposes. Sad really. Maybe one day they will make a comeback. I hope so.
